Your first Reiki self-practice session: a simple 15-minute routine

This is a simple, gentle routine many beginners find helpful. Lineages teach different hand positions; if you have a teacher, follow their guidance.

Before you start

  • Find a quiet spot where you won’t be disturbed for 15 minutes. Silence your phone.
  • Sit in a chair with your feet flat on the floor, or lie down comfortably.
  • Set the self-practice timer if you like.

The routine

  1. Settle (2 minutes). Close your eyes and take a few slow breaths. Our calm breathing tool can help you find a steady pace.
  2. Gassho (1 minute). Bring your palms together in front of your chest and let your attention rest on where your hands meet.
  3. Principles (1 minute). Silently or quietly say the five principles.
  4. Hand positions (10 minutes). Rest your hands lightly, for about 2 minutes each, over your eyes, the sides of your head, the back of your head, your upper chest and your lower ribs. Move slowly between positions.
  5. Finish (1 minute). Bring your palms together again, take a deep breath and open your eyes. Have a glass of water and notice how you feel.

Tips

  • There is no right or wrong feeling. Some people notice warmth or calm; others notice nothing in particular. Both are normal.
  • Little and often tends to be easier to keep up than long, occasional sessions.
  • If any position is uncomfortable, skip it.
