Reiki is a Japanese practice that began with Mikao Usui in the 1920s. Today it is practised around the world, mostly as a way to relax, slow down and spend quiet time with yourself or others.
What happens in Reiki practice?
In a typical session a person sits or lies down, fully clothed, while the practitioner rests their hands lightly on or just above the body in a series of positions. Many people also practise on themselves (self-practice) for a few minutes a day. There is no special equipment and nothing to swallow or apply.
The five principles
Many lineages teach the five Reiki principles (Gokai): Just for today, do not anger. Do not worry. Be grateful. Work diligently. Be kind to others. People often recite them at the start or end of practice.
What Reiki is not
- It is not a religion, and you do not need to hold any belief to try it.
- It is not a medical treatment. Reiki.cn does not claim that Reiki cures, treats or diagnoses anything. Keep seeing your doctor or other health professional for health concerns.
