Most Reiki training is organised into levels (sometimes called degrees). The names and content differ between lineages and teachers, so treat this as a general overview only.
Level 1
Usually focused on self-practice: the history and principles, basic hand positions and a daily routine. Many people take only Level 1 for their own relaxation practice.
Level 2
Often builds on Level 1 with further techniques and symbols, and practice with other people.
Master / Teacher level
Generally for people who want to deepen their own practice or teach others. Length and requirements vary widely.
Attunements
In many lineages each level includes one or more attunements (in Japanese styles often called reiju). This is a short, quiet ritual in which the teacher works with the student, who usually sits with eyes closed and hands in Gassho. Lineages describe its meaning and purpose in different ways, and the details are usually taught in class. It is a ceremony within the practice, not a medical procedure, and it is fine to ask your teacher what it involves before you agree to take part.
Good to know
- There is no single worldwide standard or governing body for Reiki levels.
- A certificate shows that someone took a class; it is not a medical or health qualification.
- Take your time between levels and practise regularly.
