The five Reiki principles (Gokai) and how to use them each day

The five principles, often called the Gokai, are short reminders that many Reiki practitioners recite every day. Wording varies a little between translations.

  1. Just for today, do not anger. Notice anger when it comes up, and pause before you react.
  2. Do not worry. Bring your attention back to what you can do right now.
  3. Be grateful. Name one or two things you’re thankful for.
  4. Work diligently. Do your daily tasks, and your practice, with care.
  5. Be kind to others. Offer patience and kindness, including to yourself.

“Just for today”

The phrase “just for today” makes the principles manageable: you don’t have to be perfect forever, only to try today.

Simple ways to practise

  • Say the principles at the start of your self-practice, in Gassho.
  • Write them on a card and keep it where you’ll see it.
  • At the end of the day, reflect on one principle you found easy and one you found hard.
