What does a Reiki session feel like?

Experiences vary a lot from person to person, and from one session to the next. Here’s what people commonly describe, so you know what to expect. These are personal experiences, not health effects.

Before the session

  • You stay fully clothed. Wear something comfortable.
  • The practitioner should explain what they’ll do and ask whether light touch is OK or you’d prefer hands-off.
  • Tell them about anything that would help you feel comfortable, such as a pillow, blanket or no music.

During the session

Sessions often last 30–60 minutes, lying on a treatment table or sitting in a chair. People commonly mention:

  • Feeling relaxed, calm or sleepy. Some people fall asleep.
  • Noticing warmth or tingling where the hands rest.
  • Noticing nothing in particular, which is also completely normal.
  • A wandering mind. You don’t need to do anything special.

You can ask to pause, change position or stop at any time.

Afterwards

Take a moment before getting up, have some water, and notice how you feel. If you have any health concerns, talk to a doctor or other qualified health professional. Reiki is not a substitute for medical care.
